Budapest Trip: Day 1

Right after my trip to Northern Europe, I went with the Buddy Network again to Budapest, which is actually made up of 2 cities: Buda and Pest. We took the bus there, and I have to say that the city is a lot nicer than I expected. I mean you can still easily tell that it's ex-communist and the living standard's not as high as Western Europe, but it is still a very beautiful city. I guess I got my first impression from the movie Im Juli, which due to plot requirements was shot in more shady areas.

Right after we got to the city after noon, we had a tour starting at Heroes' Square.

.

The leaders of the 7 tribes that founded Hungary

Musuem of Fine Arts

Palace of Arts

Andrassy Ut leading from Heroes' Square

Hungarian Academy of Sciences

Hungarian Parliament, 4th largest in the world after the ones in Romania, Argentina and Britain

Fishermen's Bastion and Matthias Church. Our tour continued as we crossed the Danube into Buda to the Buda castle.

Matthias Church. Too bad I didn't have a chance to go in...

2 guys were 20 minutes late getting back to the bus so we couldn't go to some gallery and went straight to our hotel after the castle instead >:(

For dinner we went to this boat restaurant on the Danube, which was very nice. On our way we walked by the river and the night scenes were even more beautiful. The Buda castle and the Chain Bridge were all lighted up!

With Geraldine, another Sarah, and Maite from France

What I had: chicken breast with nockerl. It was good :P

Our room. The hotel wasn't as nice as the one we stayed in Prague, but it's alright. I didn't feel like going clubbing and spending the money, and I was dead tired so I just went back to the hotel and rested

the bathroom

And during the night there was actually and incident at the hotel. The fire alarm was on for more than an hour; the first time it was set off by some people smoking, and the second time by these British people. Apparently they beat up this older German couple just because they don't like Germans, and they set off the alarm when they were fighting and the police came and arrested them. But the hotel management somehow thought some guys from our group caused the whole thing, and they dragged them out of their hotel room at 4 in the morning and questioned them. It was absolutely barbaric what they did without any evidence whatsoever. And amazingly, I was so tired that i slept through the whole thing without being aware of any of this happening... good that there wasnt a real fire... otherwise I woulda been burnt alive to death.... scary thought...
