Day 8: Amsterdam
After our 2nd day in Copenhagen, we caught the night train again to Amsterdam. Again we were running late so we had to take the taxi :( When we got to Amsterdam we were all impressed by how beautiful the city is. Everything is so well preserved and everywhere is just so beautiful with all the canals. And it's such a liberal country and the people are just so nice over there. They are definitely the nicest and most friendly people I've met in Europe so far. The only thing I didn't like about the city is the red light district. If it weren't for that Amsterdam would definitely be my favorite city. Oh an I was almost a victim of pick pocketing. Two Moroccan guys teamed up and tried to steal stuff out of my bag in the internet cafe. Fortunately I happened to turn around in time and caught them red-handed. But they ran away so I couldn't bring them to justice :S
A beautiful house near the hostel.
A typical street in Amsterdam, with a canal in the middle and beautiful townhouses lining the street.
.
First we went to Anne Frankhuis. (No pictures allowed :( ) It's interesting to go there except they didn't keep the original furnishings and instead just put some exhibits in there. I think the original furnishings would have been more interesting. Now visitors can only see from pictures what the hide out used to look like. They also had this thought-provoking interactive exhibit where visitor can vote on issues of freedom.

an Amsterdam street
Magna Plaza, a 19th century monument that's converted into a shopping centre
the square at city centre
Nieuwe Kerk
Koninklijk Paleis. Too bad it was closed to the public because the Queen is in residence i think?
narrow streets of Amsterdam
street markets in Amsterdam
Amsterdams Histrisch Museum
.
Begijnhof, the beautiful sanctuary for the Beguines, a lay Catholic sisterhood
another beautiful street
.
.
The Golden Bend, the richest area in the city. Most houses in the city are only 6 or even 3 meters wide, but here the houses are a lot wider with tens of rooms.
.
beautiful canals
Hermitage Amsterdam
Stadhuis/Muziektheater
Hortus Botanicus
The Plantage, a huge park wtih Artis, a zoological complex, 3 greenhouses, a planetarium, a geological museum, an aquarium and a zoological museum
.

.
Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum with a replica of the Amsterdam
Nemo, Holland's national science center out on the water
I didn't get to go to any windmills in Amsterdam but at least saw one in the background haha :P
beautiful view of the harbour
the beautiful train station at night
In the evening we went to the famous red light district in the old part of the town. Scantly clad prostitutes just stand in the brothel windows and all the sex shops with explicit pictures advertise their live sex shows. It really feels a little shady at night, and I was warned not to take any close-up pictures, otherwise the prostitutes will chase after you and make you pay for the pictures
the buildings lights up at night
The front hall of the hostel. It is in one of the town houses by the canal.
