Graz
Today we're having an all-day trip to Graz, Austria's second largest city. The weather really turned rainy and cold overnight.
We met at the Westbahnhof train station
Austrian villages along the way
.
.
.
original iron plated door of a castle that no longer exists
.
double spiral stairs
spiraling up!! @_@~~
Gothic decoration on the stairs
door beside the stairway
Mausoleum of Ferdinand II, designed by the Italian Pietro de Pomis in the late 17th century, after Protestantism is banned
Courtyard of the old university
Clock tower
Old shopping street
Arches in one of the courtyards. Behind is the Landeszeughaus, museum of historial weapons.
sculpture on a pillar
Schlossberg in the background with the Uhrturm, the clock tower.
Graz's city hall
The hallway in one of the churches in Graz
the courtyard of the church
Inside the church
.
The modern building in Graz. Looks like a metal heart with multiple arteries pointing out!?
The artificial "island" on the river. It has a coffee shop and even a playground in it. Can rise and fall with the water level. Sharon bought some chestnuts from the vendor nearby. Mmm... Chestnuts...
The front of the restaurant where we had lunch
The entrance of the restaurant
The room in the restaurant where we were sitting. It has medieval decor with armours and swords :P
The lunch was ok except the portions were really small and the fish wasn't really cooked enough and tasted fishy. I forgot that you have to pay extra for the bread... The restaurants here are evil! They know you'd be dead hungry when you come in and can't resist to eat the bread instead of waiting for your order!
at the lunch table
A collection of old postcards and coins at the restaurant
After lunch we went to the Freilichtmuseum Stuebing, the open-air museum. It's a museum of traditional Austrian buildings from past centries. Pretty primitive stuff!
.
.
water mill
Rope maker
The oven and apparatus to remove fibre from plants to make fabrics.
Firehall. The fire trucks are pulled by horses.
A farm house
The main room of the farm house. It's a living room, dining room, kitchen, and even has a box bed for a sick family member so the woman of the house can take care of him/her more easily. The woman is supposed to keep the open fire place on the entire year because it's bad luck to have the fire go out. The fire is only allowed to die down on Easter Friday, and the children will bring the holy fire from the church on Easter Saturday. The open fire place does not have a chimney, so the smoke collects below the ceiling to dry firewood and smoke meat and only escapes through a smoke vent. "As long as you sit down, the smoke won't bother you!?"
A new room was added beside the kitchen later. It has a really low door so the smoke wouldn't get in. The smoke-free condition was a "big improvement in life quality!?"
a school classroom
a richer farmer's house
the living room
the horse stalls are connected to the house
piggies
sheep
